Someday.
Someday you’ll go to that place you’ve always wanted to go.
Someday you’ll switch careers.
Someday you’ll eat healthier and start working out.
Someday you’ll live the life you’ve always dreamed of.
The problem with someday, is that it often turns to dust.
You act as if tomorrow is guaranteed to be there. As if you’ve made a contract with the universe to allow you the amount of time you think is right. You act like you’ll live forever and needn’t rush.
But that just isn’t the case.
Tomorrow is an Illusion
You could wake up dead tomorrow. Tomorrow doesn’t always come. And it can happen in a second, without notice, without warning. Just over.
And all that waiting for the right time, was for nothing. You die without doing the things you wanted to do.
Maybe you think the time isn’t right. There are too many other factors at play. The kids need to get bigger, you need more money, you don’t feel motivated enough.
There’ll never be the perfect time. You’re waiting yourself out of time. There’s always going to be an excuse, a road block. That’s the universe asking how bad you want it.
Live in the Now
Sounds cliché, but tomorrow is only a maybe. So how about focusing on today?
What can you do today to move you towards your dreams? What can you do today to start? To begin?
Today is all that really counts. Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow won’t matter if you waste today. But if you make today count, each tomorrow will be better.
I’ve spent many years waiting for the right time to quit my job and do what I actually love. I was afraid. The time was never right. It was scary and hard and I kept putting it off.
Then my mom died. And when she died, I saw first-hand what it looked like to die without doing all the things you wanted. To be gone, and with that gone-ness, leave behind a list of things you wished you’d done.
And you can’t go back. You can rewind time to try again. The only thing you can control is right now. Today.
What’s Your Dream?
What’s that thing you keep putting off? Is it a job, a move, a lifestyle change?
Where do you want to be? Answer that question. To me, or to yourself. Where do you want to go before your time is up? Who do you want to be?
And once you’ve answered that question, decide how you’ll get there. And then go.
It doesn’t have to be all at once. You don’t have to change it all or do it all in one day.
Those little changes, they’ll get you started. They’ll inspire and motivate you. And with each small step, you’ll get closer and closer to where you want to be.
No Regrets
You don’t really regret the things you try. They teach you things and take you places.
The real regrets lie with the things you never did. The things you were too scared to try. All the things you put off for the illusive tomorrow.
Those are the regrets that’ll hurt your soul on your deathbed. In the moment when it becomes too late to go back and try again. The time will have run out.
It’s a terrible feeling. But it’s reality.
If I could give you any advice, it’s to act on the dreams that live within your soul.
I finally quit my job when my mom died. I’m not a rich writer (yet). But I haven’t been this happy or felt this free since I was a kid. I’m truly loving my life for the first time in a really long time.
Life is an adventure. We forget to have fun. Just because we’re adults doesn’t mean we have to be so serious. Life is so amazing. And we get to be here living it!
So remember to find the joy in this life. Remember to dream and to make those dreams reality. Life is painfully short. And today matters. So much more than you might realize.
Make today count.
